When John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) was a little boy, he made a wish that Ted (Seth MacFarlane), his beloved teddy bear, would come alive. Thirty years later, foul-mouthed Ted is still John's constant companion, much to the chagrin of Lori (Mila Kunis), John's girlfriend. Though Lori's displeasure is exacerbated by the pair's constant consumption of beer and weed, she's not the one who's most disappointed with John; it may take the intervention of John's boyhood toy to help him grow up at last.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ted's "romance versus bromance" plot is familiar, but the film's held aloft by the high-concept central premise and a very funny (albeit inconsistent) script.

Ted (2012) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Deborah Ross The Spectator The greatest compliment I can pay Seth MacFarlane's Ted is that although this is essentially one of those slacker, stoner comedies, and such comedies aren't really my thing... this did make me laugh quite a bit. Sep 1, 2018 Full Review Ted (2012) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Violet Lucca Film Comment Magazine It is a film that seems to have an endless middle. Jun 28, 2013 Full Review Ted (2012) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Donald Clarke Irish Times There's just enough mileage in the gag to keep the movie spluttering through an energetic series of pop-cultural references and broadly staged orgies of profanity. Rated: 4/5 Aug 3, 2012 Full Review Ted (2012) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) José C. Donayre Guerrero EscribiendoCine With Family Guy-style jokes and references to Springfield, the humor, based on current topics such as homosexuality, sex, and other vices... permeates all elements of the film, from comedy to romance, suspense, action and comedy. Rated: 2/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Ted (2012) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Ted becomes a character that’s more than just a plot device or source of vulgar humor; he’s one of those oddly real characters brought to life by subtle and effective special FX. lieala r Absolute masterpiece, work of art, You haven't lived life, if you haven't this Absolute work of art 5/5 Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Mate P Ted is a funny movie, with a very simple and predictable story. The characters are okay, I rooted for John, but they are all extremely simple and one-dimensional. It was nice to bring in real-life people as characters into the story. The dialogues were mostly good, but the character writing was too one-dimensional. Most of the jokes landed for me, but some were too over the top.The cinematography, editing, directing, production design, sound and music were all just okay. The acting though, was pretty good, both Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg had done a great job, with a funny voice-over performance from Seth McFarlane.Ted is an enjoyable movie, but that doesn't mean it's a good one. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review SkyRo P Who would have imagined that a talking bear with a penchant for profanity would spawn a successful franchise like Ted? The movie itself may seem ridiculous and nonsensical, following a path of chaos and absurdity. However, the humor and banter between the foul-mouthed bear and Mark Wahlberg elevate the film to a level of endearing silliness.Despite its dumb and outlandish nature, the charm lies in the comedic dynamic between the bear and Wahlberg, drawing viewers in with their playful exchanges. While the movie may be cheesy and over-the-top, the irresistible humor and wit make it easy to overlook its shortcomings. It's important to note that Ted is not your typical family-friendly, lovable teddy bear. Rather, he is a crude and inappropriate character known for his adult-oriented antics. The humor often delves into risqué territory, with Ted's antics revolving around topics that may not be suitable for all audiences. At its core, Ted is a hilarious comedy that thrives on absurdity and irreverent humor. Despite its unconventional premise and mature themes, the film manages to charm audiences with its outlandish humor and unconventional charm. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review nick s Just a bit unnecessarily crass, which detracts from the humour. I suspect the director thinks it adds rather than subtracts, but I don't agree. The opening couple of minutes were good. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review Scott W Hard no. Several good gags do not make a comedy film, and this one goes on waaay too long. If you've seen the previews, you've seen all the good stuff.
