A2 ALBANY (OR.) DEMOCRAT-HERALD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1998 On the Record CjOIX16S Woman sentenced to 30 years for sex COMMUNITY CALENDAR children, Heiser said. torney Steve Black asked for probation. Hinton claimed to be Ashley's victim, the equivalent of a battered spouse. "That claim is based solely on her credibility," Heiser said. "If she thought it would benefit her, she would look you straight in the eye and tell you the world was flat.

"For her to represent that she's a victim is an insult to all the victims in this case." Police played a videotape of their initial interview with Hinton last winter, when she repeatedly denied that she or Ashley had sexually abused any children. "I swear to God, I had no idea he was doing this," she said. An hour into the police interview, officers played Hinton an audiotape of her voice and Ashley's as they talked about sexually abusing the children and their sexual attraction to She pleaded no contest later to six counts of first-degree sexual abuse. The 366-month sentence is not subject to Measure 11, since the crimes occurred before that law was in effect, Benton County Prosecutor Scott Heiser said. With good behavior, Hinton could be released from prison in about 24 years.

Corvallis police said Hinton provided day care for children ages 1 to 12 at an apartment on Conifer Boulevard in the early 1990s and was the next door neighbor of Daniel Harris Ashley, 62, who was convicted in June 1997 of multiple sex crimes against children for whom he had once babysat. Police said Hinton and Ashley had been lovers. Attorneys and witnesses outlined the case against Hinton for more than four hours Tuesday in Benton County Circuit Court. Heiser asked for a prison sentence, while defense at "She claimed thfci prosecution was Initiated by Dan Ashley fr om his prison cell," Heiser said. "That is abs olutely false.

After Ashley's arrest in June 1997, police seized assorted evidence from his home, Heiser said. In reviewing the evidence, they found the tape, contacted Ashley in prison, then arrested Hinton. In September 1995, Hinton was charged with murder by abuse after 23-month-old Alex Cannell died of injuries authorities believed were caused while he was Hinton's foster child. She pleaded no contest to reduced charges of criminally negligent homicide and fourth-degree assault, served nine months in jail and was placed on three years' probation. She lived in Oakridge before her latest arrest, BY MARILYN MONTGOMERY Albany Democrat-Herald CORVALLIS Shirley Ann Hinton, a former registered nurse convicted two years ago of causing the death of a disabled child she had cared for, was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison today for sexually abusing other children in her day care center.

Benton County Judge Henry Dickerson passed sentence this morning after hearing more than four hours of testimony and legal argument Tuesday. The judge called her conduct the most despicable of human behavior. Hinton, 40, formerly known as Shirley Ann Faucett, Shirley Ann Peters and Shirley Ann Temple, was arrested in February by Corvallis police. She was indicted for 19 counts of sodomy and sexual abuse. i Ag show continues at Linn Expo The Liinn County Fair Expo Center is host an ag show this week produced by Great American! Productions.
